The UN General Assembly Special Session on
Children was held in New York from May 8 to 10,
2002. The assembly reviewed the implementation
of the Declaration on the Survival, Protection
and Development of Children and the Plan of Action
adopted in the 1990 World Summit for Children,
redefined the strategies and objectives of the
Global Movement for Children in the next ten years,
and adopted the Outcome Document, 'A World Fit
for Children'. Madam Gu Xiulian, Vice-Chairwoman
of National Working Committee on Children and
Women under the State Council and Vice-President
of the All-China Women's Federation attended the
special session, accompanying State Councilor
Wu Yi.
During the special session, Gu also attended
the First Spouses Forum: Women's Leadership For
Children and met with Han myung-sook, Minister
of Gender Equality, Korea, Ms. Makiko Arima,,
personal representative of Japan's Prime Minister
and Kharel, Minister of Women, Children and Social
Welfare, Nepal. They exchanged views on women
and children's development. Gu emphasised the
priority given by the Chinese government to issues
related to children and the government's determination
to contribute to strengthened regional co-operation
and exchange in Asia Pacific.

Gu Xiulian, Vice-Chairwoman of National Working
Committee on Children and Women under the State
Council and Vice-President of ACWF met with Ms.
Makiko Arima, personal representative of Japanese
Prime Minister.
