Wenxiu, Member of the Secretariat of the
All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), attended
the celebration of "World Rural Women's
Day", "International Day for the
Eradication of Poverty", "World
Food Day" and "United Nations
Day" held by UNDP in Beijing. Mme.
Mo addressed the meeting on behalf of ACWF.
She reviewed in brief poverty alleviation
programs and achievements by the government
and efforts by ACWF for poverty eradication
among women. She stressed that poverty alleviation
among women is a systematic project that
calls for concerted efforts by UN agencies,
government departments and NGOs from their
respective perspectives. Other speakers
include Kerstin Leitner, Resident Representative
of UNDP in China, and leaders of the State
Council Leading Group on Poverty Alleviation
and CICET. The celebration featured "Rural
Women Fighting Hunger to Reduce Poverty".
Awards were presented to ten rural women
in China who were winners in a photo competition
on the theme organized by UNDP. A short
traditional and modern Chinese opera/dance
show on the theme of micro-credit for women
in poverty eradication and fighting hunger
also took place during the ceremony.
