Upon the invitation
of the All-China Women's Federation, the
New Zealand Women's Delegation of six headed
by Madam Barbara Glenie, President of the
National Council of Women in New Zealand,
visited Beijing, Kunming, Lijiang and Guangzhou
from May 23rd to June 4th. Madam Gu Xiulian,
Vice President and First Member of the Secretariat
of ACWF held a banquet in the delegation's
honor. The delegation exchanged information
with their Chinese sisters on women's education,
health care, employment and their participation
in decision-making. Besides members of the
National Council of Women in New Zealand,
the delegation also included representatives
from Maori Women's Welfare League. They
visited rural women's development projects
and women-run businesses and learnt China's
policies for minority groups and the development
of minority women. The delegation was surprised
with the rapid development of China and
the scale of its large cities. They admired
the welfare policies that Chinese women
enjoy, such as paid maternity leave. The
delegation considered the visit to China
a great success and invited ACWF to send
a delegation to New Zealand next year.
