| For the
5th East Asia & Pacific Ministerial Consultation
(MinCon) on Sharing the Future for Children
and the UN Special Assembly on Children, the
All-China Women's Federation took the lead
and organized the first Chinese Children's
Forum with the theme of "We Enjoy Our
Own Rights" between April 7 and 9, 2001.
The
Forum was to make children fully aware of
their own rights, the whole society respect
children's rights and value children's participation.
60 children between the age of 10 and 18
participated in this forum, who came from
11 provinces and municipalities and represented
13 different ethnic groups in China, including
Han, Man, Hui, Korean, Mongolian and Yi
nationalities. They were highly representative
of the children in China including the handicapped,
orphans, adolescent delinquents, and those
with single parent, imprisoned parent, or
poverty.
To
make the forum a real participation of children,
children were free to determine all the
matters concerning defining the topics,
drafting the reports, organizing the activities
and electing the representatives with the
help of the participatory approach. At the
same time, adults only provided the guidance
and assistance. Such kind of practice is
the very first time in China.
The child participants were very active
to express their views on their self-determined
topics like education, sanitation and health,
entertainment and media, children in difficult
circumstances, environment and other issues
concerned. Four representatives are elected
among them to participate in the Asia-Pacific
Children's Forum held in Bangkok from April
23 to 26.
This forum received
technical and financial support of international
organizations such as UNICEF, Save the Children
and PLAN International.
