The
second tripartite review of the project
of "Reemployment and Venture Creation
for Laid-Off Women Workers (LOWWs) "
was held at the Tianjin Women Business Incubator
Center on March 1, 2001. Participants in
the review meeting were Ms. Zhang Jing,
National Project Director and Director-General
of International Liaison Department, ACWF,
Wang Zhiqiu, Vice National Project Director
and President, TWF, Mr. Macleod Nyirongo,
Deputy Resident Representative, UNDP, Mr.
Toshihiro Tanaka, Assistant Representative,
UNDP, Ms. Kim Pendreigh, First Secretary,
AusAID, and relevant officials from Ministry
of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation
(MOFTEC).
Assisted by the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP) and Australian Agency for
International Development (AusAID) ,the
project is implemented by the All-China
Women's Federation (ACWF) through Tianjin
Women's Federation (TWF). It aims to contribute
to job creation and reemployment for laid-off
women workers in China's urban areas through
micro-credit provision, new venture creation
services, employment information networking,
strengthening of training capacity. The
duration of the project is three years,
with a total investment of 2 million US
dollars.
The
meeting reviewed that the work of the last
year had successfully stimulated and supported
the enthusiasm of the LOWWs in venture creation
and reemployment, and that effective activities
had been carried out in accordance with
the project's features and objectives with
the coordination of the parities concerned.
The meeting had also discussed the problems
accrued in the process of the project implementation
and made decisions on actions to be taken.
Since
the launch of the project, 309 LOWWs have
received a small loan, and a business incubator
center aiming to help LOWWs create small
businesses has been established. The center
has so far absorbed 27 micro and small enterprises,
most of which were run by laid off women
workers. Total jobs created through these
enterprises were 500.
