On Feb. 22, 2001, White
Ribbon Media Event "Working Together
for the Ending of Domestic Violence"
was sponsored in Beijing by the All-China
Women's Federation (ACWF) in collaboration
with United Nations Development Fund for
Women (UNIFEM).
White
Ribbon Campaign was first initiated by a
group of Canadian men in 1991. They wore
white ribbons to show male's protest against
violence by men against women inflicted
by men. Up till now, this campaign has been
taken up in many countries.
In
1999, the General Assembly of the United
Nations adopted a resolution identifying
November 25 as "International Day for
the Elimination of Violence Against Women
", and White Ribbon Campaign has become
part of its commemorative activities.
This
is the first time that a White Ribbon Campaign
was ever held in China. The media event
is aimed to enhance the awareness and sensitivity
of the general public in particular that
of men and decision makers to domestic violence,
and to promote concerted efforts by all
social forces to stop violence at home.
Participants in the Event include officials
from the Supreme People's Court, Supreme
People's Procuratorate, Ministry of Public
Security, Ministry of Civil Affairs and
Ministry of Justice. Liu Hairong, Vice-president
of ACWF, and an official with the Ministry
of Public Security spoke at the meeting.
They shared with the participants information
about some major actions and measures taken
in China for combating violence against
women and pledged strengthened efforts on
advocacy and actions by the whole society
for the ending of the violence. Mrs. Kerstin
Leitner, Resident Representative of UNDP
in China, Mr. Edwin J. Judd, Resident Representative
of UNICEF, and Ms. Chen Lanyan, Gender Adviser
of Northeast Asia from UNIFEM also spoke.
Representatives of some UN agencies and
foreign embassies in Beijing also attended
the meeting. Correspondents from about 50
media agencies from home and abroad were
present.
A
pilot project for this event was launched
in Hanyang District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province
on Feb. 14-15, 2001, through which training
for local male citizens including in leadership
positions and a large-scale counseling service
for eliminating violence at home was provided.
Hanyang District was also represented at
the Beijing Media Event and a video on the
project and other related local activities
was screened.
