Publicizing
Knowledge on Women's Health
To publicize knowledge on health among women is one
of key areas for improving women's health. In the countryside
where education is more scant, departments of public health
have set up healthcare educational teams after training rural
doctors. By relying on them, "Schools for the Pregnant"
and "Domestic Schools" have been established. In
addition, posters concerning the healthcare of pregnant and
lying-in women and safe delivery have been pasted on walls
and books on health sent to women.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Public Health and the
NWCWC made videotapes recorded with programs covering topics
such as decreasing mortality risk of pregnant and lying-in
women, eliminating tetanus among the newly born, avoiding
iodine deficiency, preventing AIDS and reforming rural lavatories.
The tapes were given to women free of charge. In 2003, 200
"mothers' healthcare fliers" organized by the China
Women Development Fund were driven to western provinces such
as Shaanxi and Guizhou .The program runs courses and training
classes among local women, spreading knowledge on healthcare
of women and children. By making use of the local medical
system it gives women in poverty-stricken regions medical
treatment and healthcare services.
The Chinese Government lays great stress on AIDS prevention
and treatment. Priority is given to public education among
the floating population, women and youngsters. Knowledge of
AIDS is listed as part of school healthcare education by education
departments. Materials on AIDS prevention are distributed
