Environment Advocates Gender Equality
Women's
media has developed rapidly alongside China's reforms. By
2000, there were 123 newspapers and magazines for women. Chinese
Central Television (CCTV), People's Daily, China Radio International,
Beijing Television and Guangdong Television all have women's
programs while Hunan and Heilongjiang Provinces have set up
special TV channels for women. Some women's organizations
and media have started to pay attention to women's use of
the Internet and set up many websites targeting women in the
wake of the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995.
Many influential
programs have been produced to publicize the basic State policy
of gender equality and women's development. The CCTV program
"Half of the Sky" focuses on women, many issues
ranging from health to equality to the way they live. It reflects
women's lives and their status vis-à-vis men and has
created a forum on TV for the discussion of gender issues.
China Women's Daily administrated by the All-China Women's
Federation aims to promote women's progress, development and
liberation. It actively safeguards the lawful rights and interests
of women and children and scrutinizes events and issues concerning
women. The publication also plays a role in solving problems
through the influence of public opinion.
Women's
media tackle social issues from a female perspective and focus
on gender discrimination in the mass media. The Women's Media
Monitoring Network, founded in 1996, has been striving to
reveal misunderstandings and errors in reports about women.
It further promotes the concept of sharing media
