cities have established various agencies
for tackling domestic violence. For instance, the first legal
medical expert clinic was set up in Beijing for individuals
harmed from domestic violence. In the city of Qingdao, an
assessment centre for injuries from domestic violence was
established. These agencies provide shelter, medical and psychological
care plus legal consultation services to women suffering from
domestic violence.
Non-governmental
organizations and people from all walks of life take an active
part in helping women through legal aid. The Women's Research
Institute under the China Research Institute of Management
Science opened the first national hotline for women in need
of legal aid in 1992. Over the past 10-plus years, an estimated
1,000 hotlines have been opened for women by non-governmental
organizations. Some non-governmental organizations and colleges
and universities have established legal aid centres. Some
have established women's departments and some are orientated
directly to women in poverty.
